Birthmark
February 23, 2012
Kindness is a birthmark
Unseen by the eyes.
It settles there, quiet and subtle,
Between your lungs.
Granted to too few,
It lies dormant in some
For years, just waiting to
Explode forth in a violent
Array of vibrant colors.
It can, however, be
A learned behavior,
And one act of kindness
Can attribute the genesis
Of a thousand more
(But it would never
Boast that it did).
Truthfully, even those
Who have little else to give
Will willingly grant their
Kindness to those who need it.
Children seem to express
It best, or rather, in the
Purest form possible:
A flowering moment of truth
In the gift of a white dandelion.
Alas, some have grown
Accustomed to ignoring the
Slight pang of mystery and
Energy that kindness can bring.
They keep it bottled up, for one
Reason or another, until
It dries up completely
When they fade from this world.
My recommendation:
Sit quietly, and if you hear the
Tiny humming of kindness
Building up within you,
Listen to it.
